Button It
by John Francis Bowyer
Some people aren't going to consider this a trend, but if you're in the habit of wearing shirts you're going to want to listen up.
Doing your top button up was always considered the acceptable attitude of all goody-goodys at school, and if you were one of the kids who bothered doing it, you were probably pretty lame. Well not anymore! All the cool kids do it now, promise!
It's possibly a retaliation, some form of silent protest to the decline of the humble shirt. Once a staple wardrobe piece for gents up and down the country, it became slightly bastardized through the '90s with Joe Bloggs wearing louts adobting them over football shirts. However, untucked, unbuttoned and often in lurid shades the shirt lost it's way a bit. But now it's having a style revival.
I'm not insinuating the shirt went away, I know it didn't, I'm just saying it wasn't really something that passed as chic evening wear anymore. But now, still often untucked, but buttoned all the way, they once again look pretty sharp.
Those ahead of the game are already adopting the necklace under collar look as an added extra, and it seemed that over fashion week the trend photographers were pouncing on any man with a buttoned collar and something under it that wasn't some variation of a tie.
So button it.
